Despite how it sounds, Hoon Hay takes its name from a farm in Hoon, Derbyshire, the childhood home of Captain Wickham Talbot Harvey, a British Royal 10th Hussars officer who settled the area in 1852. Harvey only lasted four years before a fire destroyed his property, prompting his return to the United Kingdom, and further fires in later years cleared much of the original woodland that once stood there. Today Hoon Hay is a genuinely sizeable suburb of close to 9,500 people, considerably larger than most of its Port Hills neighbours, yet it still borders farmland and the semi rural Hoon Hay valley to its south.
