Aidanfield takes its name from Mother Aidan Phelan, the Superior of the Mount Magdala Institute, a home for women and girls established on the site in 1886 by Father Laurence Ginaty. The Good Shepherd Sisters owned the land until 2001, and the beautiful St John of God Chapel, completed in 1912, still stands today with a Category I heritage listing. When the subdivision was built, many of its street names were chosen to honour former Sisters of the Good Shepherd Order who had worked at Mount Magdala over the decades. The first residents did not move in until 2002, making Aidanfield one of the newest suburbs in the area.
That relatively recent history means many Aidanfield households are still settling in and getting to know the neighbourhood, and having a trusted local butcher just down the road in Halswell is a small thing that makes the move easier.
Unlike most Christchurch suburbs, Aidanfield has no shopping facilities within its own boundary, with the nearest shops around two and a half kilometres away in neighbouring Halswell.
