Halswell only properly joined the Christchurch urban area in the 1990s. The suburb is named after Edmund Halswell, a government officer who arrived in New Zealand in 1841 and never actually lived locally, and for decades Halswell stayed a separate rural village while the city grew around it. Oaklands was carved out to the north in the 1960s, Westlake followed in the late 1980s, and it was the Aidanfield subdivision in the 1990s that finally closed the gap and joined Halswell to the rest of Christchurch. Halswell School has been teaching local children since 1864 and was rebuilt after the 2010 earthquake, and today Halswell is the largest suburb in Christchurch by the sheer number of homes.
That mix of old village roots and rapid new growth is exactly the customer base we have served since 2007, from families who have been in the area for generations to new households moving into the latest subdivision.
Right in the centre of the suburb, Halswell Domain has a playground, a skate park, a boating pond, and a miniature railway that still runs on Sunday afternoons, a genuine local tradition rather than a tourist attraction. On the edge of the Domain stands the Halswell War Memorial, unveiled in 1924. A short drive away, Halswell Quarry Park covers 60.4 hectares of old quarry land, complete with walking and mountain bike tracks, though the quarry itself is technically just over the suburb boundary in neighbouring Kennedys Bush. The Nottingham Stream runs through Halswell on its way to join the Halswell River.

Our hams are all cooked on the premises, with minimal water added. You can purchase them whole, or we can slice to order.
All the bacon we sell is dry cured the old-style way on our premises. As the name suggests, dry curing means that no water is added. This ensures that whether you are pan frying or grilling, the bacon doesn't steam, ensuring you get a lovely, crispy result. Perfect for your weekend breakfast!

Our premium steaks are all aged at least two weeks to maximize flavour.
